Tomb of Mary, Mother of Washington by Ernest D. Roth
This is an etching by well-known American artist Ernest D. Roth. It is from a set of etchings of landmarks around Fredericksburg, VA completed in 1928. This image depicts the tomb of Mary Washington mother of George Washington. Included in the image is Meditation Rock. The image is realistic with effective use of drypoint to enhance shadows, a technique Roth was fond of employing. This is particularly noteworthy in the deep shadow of the rock under the tree and the trunk of the tree. It is a crisp impression and there is good toning from hand wiping. It is signed and dated in the plate lower left and titled in the plate lower center. A fine image of an American landmark.
Ernest D. Roth (1879-1964) Ernest Roth was a well-known American etcher. He was born in Stuttgart, Germany but moved to the United States with his parents when he was 5 years old. He studied painting at the National Academy of Design and the New York School of Art. Despite being an accomplished painter, he was best known as an etcher, having learned the medium from accomplished American etcher James David Smillie. He had a long career and was a prolific etcher. He most notable works are from the time he spent in Italy, particularly Venice. He also spent time in Spain and New York which comprises the balance of his output. His work falls well within the school of the Whistler etching revival.
He was a member of many notable artistic organizations including the Brooklyn Society of Etchers, the Print Makers Society of California, the Chicago Society of Etchers, and the Salmagundi Club. He won many awards for his work, most notably multiple Samuel Shaw awards for etching from the Salmagundi Club, First Prize and two Logan Medals from the Chicago Society of Etchers, the Silver Medal for etching at the Panama Pacific International Exposition, and, in 1922, the Bryan Prize for Best American Print from the Print Makers Society of California. He was elected Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1920 and became a National Academician in 1928. He was a life member of the National Arts Club. While most remembered for his etchings, he was an accomplished painter winning several awards for these as well.
His work is held in most of the major collections in the United States, notably the Library of Congress, the National Academy of Design, the Brooklyn Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He is also represented in major international collections including the Bibliothèque nationale de France, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and, given his remarkable work from Italy including Venice and Florence, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
