Juene Fille Lisant by Pierre Bonnard

This is an etching titled Juene Fille Lisant (young girl reading) by noted French artist Pierre Bonnard. This is from an edition that was printed from the cancelled plate under the supervision of the artist's estate and issued by the Collector's Guild a New York based print subscription service. This was a fairly common practice in post-World War II when the interest in art collecting began to increase. The desire for works by major artists led to posthumous printings from extant plates. Many artists' estates supported this activity including Feininger, Giacometti, and Bonnard. What is nice about this particular image is that the cancellation marks are toward the bottom of the image leaving the face intact. The original of this etching was issued in 1930 as part of the series La Vie de Sainte Monique (The Life of Saint Monique). It was reissued in 1965 by the Collector's Guild in an edition limited to 200-250 images. It is printed on a full sheet that is 11 x 14 inches in size. It is initialed PB in the plate. The piece is in very good condition, although there is some toning of the paper. This does not affect the image itself. Because of the scarcity of the original, this edition is in the collections of some major art institutions such as the Birmingham Museum of Art. A beautiful etching by this French master.
