Pewter Shop Rockport by Allen Sloane
This is an etching by artist Allen Sloane. It is of a storefront in Rockport, Maine--The Pewter Shop. It's a very simple etching that presents the storefront in a realistic way. Interestingly, the center of the image is the dark shadow of the doorway flanked by two windows also in shadow. Somewhat unusual composition. It does hint at unknown treasures if one were to enter the establishment. A few branches frame the scene which is enhanced with a gas light and flower beds. The etching is in pristine condition. It is crisp and well inked. The sheet is free and full (6 x 7.5 inches) with no tears, paper loss, stains, toning, or foxing. It is signed in pencil lower right. The title is given in pencil lower center, and the edition 17/100 in pencil lower left. A sweet little piece.
There is not much information available on the artist. Even his name is spelled differently Sloan vs. Sloane. His etchings have appeared at auction and for sale. He clearly worked in the Northeast and Maine as his subjects were from these areas. He worked in a very traditional style. The are very well done and quite affordable.
