English Town Scene by Cecil Aldin
Cecil Aldin (1870 - 1935) Cecil Aldin was one of the most popular and successful of all British sporting artists. He is best known for creating large chromolithographs of hunts, coaches, and races. Aldin's renown is based on his charming compositions with bright coloring and good production values that exhibited is sense of humor in a Dickensian sense. This print falls in that genre. It shows an English Inn which, based on the dress of the people in the scene, is set in the late 18th or early 19th century. This scene is created by a lithograph, but has been handcolored using different types of opaque pigments, probably gouache. It's very English in its nature. The piece is in excellent condition. The sheet has no tears or paper loss. The colors are not faded. There is no staining or foxing. The frame is inexpensive and in poor condition. The piece has not been examined out of the frame, but the backing is not archival and should be replaced. The frame size is 15.5 inches square. An excellent piece by this well-known British artist.
