Thimble Shoal's Light by James Milton Sessions

This is a lithograph by American artist James Milton Sessions. It is a Chesapeake Bay scene featuring the iconic Thimble Shoals light. This light is in the bay between Annapolis and St. Michael's. The lighthouse is in the right center of the image and a large sailing vessel is sailing past the light. Other sailboats and one steam ship are in the background. I believe the ship in the foreground is the Annapolis U.S. Naval Academy tall ship. This is based on the three masts and the color scheme (deep blue with white gunwale). Training cruises out of Annapolis would almost always pass by the light. The image is done in an impressionist style but is colorful and realistic. It is signed Sessions in the plate lower left. It is framed with the frame size is 15 x 12 inches. The piece appears to be in very good condition with bright colors without fading, foxing, or staining. The piece has not been examined out the frame. The mat and backing are not archival. A very nice piece by an accomplished regional artist.

James Milton Sessions (1882-1962) Sessions is considered by many to be the greatest World War II “Brush Reporter” (Brush Reporters were artists embedded with troops that chronicled the war through drawing and painting) Author Howard Capponi brought this term to the forefront with his book James Milton Sessions: American World War II Artist and Premier Brush Reporter which included illustrations of 28 World War II paintings. Sessons’ works not only provide documentation of these events, but they visually portray and convey the spirit of the American fighting forces. His works can be found in Presidential and Military collections. As with many artists during the war, he was also employed to develop camouflage. His artistic output extends well beyond his work in the war. He has also been acknowledged for his depictions of Native American life. His favorite subject was the seascape, and his works span the East Coast of North America from Nova Scotia to the Bahamas. His marine and nautical prints are also highly sought after. In 1962, four of his works were chosen by the New York Graphic Society to be represented in its American Masters Collection. His work is held in many major collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Fine Art, Cleveland, The Museum of Fine Art Milwaukee, and the Seattle Art Museum.
