Landscape by Edwin Edwards
This is a beautiful etching attributed to the British lawyer and artist Edwin Edwards. It appears to be a view from a path overlooking the ocean. It has an interesting composition with the coast occupying the middle right of the image framed by trees to the left and right. One can imagine hiking along the path in the trees when this view suddenly presents itself. The location is not given, but Edward's produced some etchings from a seaside path in Pardenick, so this could be the setting. The etching itself is a technical tour de force. It is extremely complex with many different gradations of light and shadow. It is a testament to the artist's skill. The etching is not signed either in pencil or in the plate. There is a pencil signature on the back leading to the attribution. The work is consistent with Edward's style. Given its age, the etching is in good condition. There is some mat burn and tape residue at the edge of the sheet, but well away from the image. The printing is crisp and well inked. The sheet is free and the sheet size is 6.75 x 10.75 inches. Plate size is given above. There is no fading. No tears or paper loss and aside from the mat burn, no staining or foxing. A beautiful example of his work.
Edwin Edwards (1823 – 1879) Edwin Edwards was a noted painter and etcher in the 19th century. He originally trained as a lawyer and practiced very successfully but ultimately retired from practicing law at the age of 38 to pursue art full time. His interest in art came through social connections with artists, particularly the French artist Henri Fantin-Latour, who created a working portrait of Edwards and his wife. It’s not clear if he had formal training, but his connection to many of the noted artists of the day certainly provided a lot of ‘on the job training’ as it were. He worked as a landscape painter and etcher. He was very prolific and exhibited more than 50 pieces at the Royal Academy and many more at other institutions. One of the most interesting artistic experiences was an etching trip along the Thames with James Abbott MacNeill Whistler (the leader of the British etching revival), Fantin-Latour, and Francis Seymour Haden (a physician, artist, and Whistler’s son-in-law. He was another key figure in the etching revival). During that trip, Edwards created an etching of Whistler sketching. After his death a memorial exhibition was held by the Continental Gallery in London. His work is held in many major collections.
