Nassau Harbor by Martin Linsey
This is a lithograph titled Nassau Harbor by Cleveland artist Martin Louis Linsey. It shows a large 2 masted sailing vessel under cloudy skies in front of a beach lined with palm trees. The artist appears to be standing on a fishing vessel as the gunwale and nets are visible in the foreground. It has a photographic compositional quality to it, which is not surprising give that Linsey was a prolific photographer as well as painter. He spent much of his pre-war life in the Caribbean and produced many works from this time. This piece is dated in pencil 1946 next to Linsey's signature and the edition size Ed. 100. The title is given in pencil lower left. Linsey chose a brownish, almost purple ink for the lithograph giving the piece a distinctive appearance. The piece is unframed and the sheet size is given above. The plate size is 12.5 x 9.75 inches. It is in good condition. The paper is slightly toned but this is consistent across the entire sheet, so doesn't distract. There is otherwise no staining, foxing, tears, or paper loss. A very nice example of the artist's work.
Martin Louis Linsey (1915-2010)
Martin Louis Linsey was born and raised in Cleveland, OH. He had a long and remarkable career as both an artist and an art educator at the Cleveland Museum of Art. His early studies were at the Cleveland Institute of Art (1936-38). He also spent part of the pre-war years working boats in Florida and Caribbean. He began painting images from these areas in his spare time. At the outset of WWII he was refused enlistment in the Marine Corps on the basis of partial color-blindness—a somewhat unusual affliction in a visual artist. He did join the Army. During the war, as with many artistically inclined individuals, he was involved in creative visual activities such as making maps of combat areas for the military. Degree completion had to wait until after the war with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Miami and a Masters degree in Art History from Case Western Reserve University. He was eclectic in his interests. For example, while studying for his degree, he worked as a photographer and also made industrial models. There are exhibit records of his works from the 1940s (One painting was catalogued by the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in 1942). He spent his artistic working life in Cleveland before retiring to Arizona, where he worked as a photographer for the Phoenix Art Museum and ultimately New Mexico. The city of Cleveland was his favorite artistic subject and he was prolific in that regard. The Cleveland Museum of Art holds over 25 of his works in their primary and educational collections. There is also an archive, the Martin Linsey collection of Cleveland Museum of Art photographs.
