Landscape with Lighthouse by Wray Manning
This is a large gouache on masonite by American artist Wray Manning. It is done in an impressionist style and shows a lighthouse and associated buildings on a grassy point surrounded by flowering shrubs backed by a cloudy sky. It appears to be that time of day where the morning fog is just beginning to burn away as color is beginning to appear in the clouds. It's a beautiful and dramatic scene. Manning like to use the more muted colors associated with gouache for these landscapes which enhances their misty impressionist atmosphere. He also liked to use masonite for the surface. Gouache on masonite is a very unusual combination that I've only seen in works by Manning. The piece is signed Wray Manning lower left. It is in excellent condition. It was purchased as an unframed piece so I was able to examine it carefully for damage and found none. I had it archivally framed for protection. The framed size is 30 x 24 inches. A beautiful work.
Wray Manning (1887 - 1978) Wray Manning (full name Robert Wray Manning) was an Ohio artist known for landscape paintings. His initial artistic training was at the Art School in Columbus, Ohio following by studies with noted American painter Robert Henri, Kenneth Hayes Miller (best known as a printmaker), and Walt Kuhn in New York. He returned to Ohio and spent the rest of his career there. He exhibited regularly at the Annual May Shows at the Cleveland Museum of Art. His work was awarded prizes. He was a very successful commercial artist and illustrator, but also very active in fine art painting. His work is notable for its muted colors and delicate touch. He was very interested in creating atmospheric images that have a dream-like quality. Much of the information about him was found in an exhibition catalogue of a solo show at the Ten Thirty Gallery in Cleveland, Ohio. This gallery was opened by Mary and Nancy Manning, daughters of the artist. It was still operating as of 2020 run by Clemetine Wood, Wray Manning’s great-grandson. Manning’s work is held by the Whitney Museum of Art, and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
