The Hat Lady by J. O. Woodbury
This is an etching of a seated woman. When I purchased it, it was said to be done by artist J. O. Woodbury, however, I've never been able to confirm this and have been unable to find any information on the artist. It is unsigned and there is no signature in the plate. The sitter is an older woman, possibly of African descent. She is in a relaxed but awkward pose. Her features are exaggerated and her expression is neutral as she gazes at the viewer. She is wearing a tall hat possibly decorated with flowers (which is why I gave the piece the title). I think this dates from before World War II, as it has some features of social realism, but it could be later. The etching is very well done with effective use of cross-hatching to create the chiaroscuro (light and shadow). It is well struck and inked and is in excellent condition. There is no fading, foxing, staining, tears, or paper loss. There may be some mat burn at the periphery as it is not framed in archival materials. It has not been examined out of the frame. The framed size is 9.5 x 10.5 inches. This is an eclectic, quirky little portrait.
