Ship in Ice by Mary C. Allen

This is a vintage hand-tinted photograph. It is unusual in several respects. First, it shows an arctic scene, possibly Alaska, although the location is not identified. This is an atypical photographic subject. The ship in the photograph has both sails and steam-power suggesting late 19th, early 20th century. No name or flag is visible. What is most unusual is that the photographer is a woman. Her name is embossed lower left Mary C. Allen. While women were employed to hand tint photographs before the advent of color photography (as in Wallace Nutting's studio), they are never credited. I've done extensive research and cannot find any information about her. I contacted the foremost authority on hand colored photographs of the early 20th century, Michael Ivankovich, and he had also not come across any works by her. It's a wonderful image with well-preserved colors--predominantly blue with some pinkish highlights that convey the arctic scene very effectively. It is in excellent condition, probably in the original frame (size given above). The photograph itself is 10.75 x 6.25 inches in size. A very unique and unusual item.
