D'Apres Nature Plate 12 by Paul Gavarni

This is plate 12 from the series D'Apres Nature (according to nature) issued in 1858 with illustrations by French artist Paul Gavarni. The caption for this plate is Ne lui parlez pas des chiens de garde! This roughly translates to 'Don't tell him about the guard dogs!' Volume one of this series consists of 40 lithographs by Gavarni illustrating texts by several authors including J. Janin, P. de Saint-Victor, E. Texier, and Ed. and J. Goncourt. The edition was printed by Lemercier, Paris and published by Morizot. Gavarni (whose actual name was Hippolyte Guillaume Sulpice Chevalier and who lived from 1804-1866) was one of the most famous satiric artists/cartoonists/illustrators in Paris in the 19th century. He is probably second only to Honore Daumier in this regard. Gavarni created daily satirical lithographs for the Paris Journal. Some of these were issued in two major collections, D'Apres Nature and Masques et Visages (Masks and Faces). These works by Gavarni are held by most major collections in the world. This particular piece is held by the National Gallery of Art (Washington, DC)and the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. The piece is in pristine condition, remarkable given its age. There is no fading, staining, foxing, toning, paper loss, or tears. It is on a free sheet mounted to a mat board. The size given above is just for the image of the figure. The full image including text is 8.25 x 10.5 inches and the sheet is 11.25 x 15.75 inches. There is an annotation in pencil on the mat board that gives details of the work. This is an excellent example of Gavarni's artistic work.
