Pintails Pitching by Churchill Ettinger
This is an etching of 5 Pintails coming in for a landing on a quiet lake. The artist does a great job of capturing not only the markings of these distinctive birds, but the dynamic actions involved in coming in for a water landing. The use of negative space is striking. Other than the ducks, the image is framed by a few reeds in the foreground and some trees in the mid-ground. The use of plate toning is very effective and helps set the mood of the piece.
Artist Bio: Churchill Ettinger (1903-1985)
Ettinger was born New Jersey, and studied art at the National Academy of Design, the Art Students League, and the New York School of Industrial Art. He had always enjoyed sports and the outdoors which naturally led him into a life as a wildlife artist. He painted covers for a number of the country’s leading sporting magazines and was able to support himself working as an artist. While he worked in many media, Ettinger is best known for his etchings. He is estimated to have produced nearly 200 etchings in his career. These covered all types of wildlife and hunting. I believe he is best when depicting waterfowl. His images are every bit as compelling as those of Frank Benson, Hans Kleiber and other artists that command much higher prices. He spent the last decades of his life in Vermont where he was able to work and enjoy the outdoors. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress, Yale University, Dartmouth College, Iowa State College, the University of Hawaii, the Ford Foundation, Boston Public Library, Wesleyan University, and the William Rockhill Nelson Gallery of Art.
