Live Oak, Fla. by Walter Ronald Locke
This is an etching of a large live oak at the water's edge. The tree is festooned with draping Spanish Moss. Cabbage palms are clustered under the branches. The artist has mastered the chiaroscuro (clear/dark) needed to convey the bright light and the deep shadows of the scene. It's one of the best tree etchings I have (and I have many).
Artist Bio: Walter Ronald Locke (b. 1883) was apparently quite an eccentric artist. He is said to have spent 12 years in the woods not emerging into civilization. He specialized in the study of trees. He would spend summers in the north, and winters in the south primarily in Florida. Most of his work seems to date from 1930-1940. His work is held in many major museums and his highly sought.
